Bird flu vs. SARS

Ways to prevent

What is bird flu?

Bird flu, also know as avian influenza, is an infectious disease that affects birds, including chickens, ducks and turkeys. It is caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. It was first encountered in Italy 100 years ago.

How does one catch bird flu?

Through contact with lives, infected animals, their oral excretions and/ or their droppings.

What are the symptoms of bird flu?

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle ache

Can bird flu spread from person to person?

Currently scientists are uncertain if this is an airborne disease, that is, whether it can spread from person to person by inhaling the droplets they breathe out. Experts do caution however, that if someone is infected both the bird flu and the human flu, the result could lead to a "marrying" of the two viruses to produce a genetically new virus that can spread from human to human. This new virus, due to its airborne nature, could easily infect hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people and therefore, become a deadlier epidemic.
