Bird flu vs. SARS

Is bird flu deadlier than SARS?

Bird flu seems to be easier to contain than SARS. Bird flu only appears to spread through close contact with infected animals and animal products. While SARS is thought to have jumped to humans through the consumption of infected civets cats, it also showed the ability to jump from human to human, making it more difficult to control.

However, bird flu demonstrates a higher death rate than SARS. One third or about 30% of those infected in the 1997 Hong Kong outbreak died of the disease. In comparison, the SARS 2002-2003 outbreak killed about 15% of it's victims.
